Dispenser Upgrade for NYC Retailer

Client: A major NYC Fuel Retailer representing over 100 branded stations in the NYC Metropolitan area: Shell, Exxon Mobil, and Citgo

The Challenge: These stations were operating with aging equipment that was increasingly difficult to service, creating maintenance inefficiencies and potential downtime. Downtime for retail stations means that the station operator loses money. Additionally, the equipment no longer met current EMV compliance standards for secure payment processing at the dispensers. Each site, across the five boroughs, had its own unique site constraints, brand standards, and permitting requirements. The project required coordination to minimize disruption to retail operations while ensuring full regulatory compliance with NYC Fire Department (FDNY) and NYSDEC standards.

Our Approach: Our team developed a phased construction and upgrade plan to address the clients needs efficiently. The key steps included:

  • Site Assessments: Franklin service personnel conducted detailed evaluations of the existing equipment at each site including dispensers, underground piping, and point-of-sale system to determine the scope of work for each site and compatibility with the existing site infrastructure.
  • Regulatory Coordination: Managed all required permits, inspections, and documentation to ensure compliance with local and state regulations.
  • Equipment Modernization: Removed and replaced aging dispensers and associated hardware with EMV-certified fuel dispensers, ensuring reliability and data security.
  • Minimized Downtime: Recognizing that each site was an active retail location, our team placed a strong emphasis on providing the proper labor force from plumbers to technicians to complete the installation in a single, continuous work sequence.

Successful Outcome: The multi-site upgrade program resulted in a modernized retail fueling station providing operational reliability and improved customer experience. Current maintenance on fueling positions has been minimized due to new, efficient equipment and standardized components across the locations.
