Data Center Generator Fuel System: AST Installation

The Challenge: The facility required a full fuel system replacement for its onsite emergency generator system while maintaining continuous emergency generator operations during the removal and installation project.

Our Approach: The Franklin Company Contractors executed a comprehensive fuel system replacement project. We installed a temporary 6,000-gallon fuel tank to maintain emergency readiness for the onsite emergency generators during the transition. Our team cleaned and removed two existing 10,000-gallon capacity tanks from the site. We installed a new 20,000-gallon capacity Highland Fireguard UL 2085 aboveground storage tank. The installation included OmegaFlex DoubleTrac piping from the AST to the emergency generator day tanks. We removed existing emergency generator day tanks and installed new combination tank-pumpset systems. Our team also installed a Diesel Pure filter and fuel polishing system to provide onsite filtration and polishing to remove sub-micron particulates, free standing water, emulsified water, and microbial growth to maintain fuel quality.

Engineering Solution: We designed and installed a shoring system to provide protection for the data center’s cooling tower platform and equipment, as well as underground water storage tanks that were directly adjacent to the excavation area.

Complex Project Challenges:

• Sensitive Equipment Protection: The cooling tower and water storage systems were in close proximity to our excavation and tank installation area. This required a geotechnical evaluation and settlement/vibration monitoring during SOE installation and excavation.
• 100% Uptime Requirement: The emergency generators could not be without fuel during the course of the project. We developed detailed work phasing that required temporary tanks, scheduled shutdowns, timely installation of new equipment, and seamless transfer to the new fueling system.

Successful Outcome: No interruption in service and provided a long term maintenance solution with the DieselPure system to maintain fuel quality.
